so i just signed up for the list and just wanted to know if anyone else was
out here. either way i wanted to say 'hi' and that i'm really interested in
learning more about ruby & posix system programming (i probably won't use it
much for work, but hey, you never know)

Hello, feel free to say 'hi' to each other.

I have no idea who or how many people signed up so far, librelist
is run by Zed Shaw and as far as I know, he's the only one who knows.

If there are any specific topics you're interested in reading about or
want to contribute yourself, let us know.

You never know when things will come in handy :) I'll definitely cover
why this is a useful topic to learn next week.

Btw, could you shorten your 16-line sig? I remember 4 lines, <80 chars
each was the de-facto standard for Usenet back in the day. There are
still folks that have little bandwidth, especially on mobile devices.

It's will be great to hear about ruby gem with native extensions,
maybe we can make small test gem that we can develop together in
github with Eric's help.

This is a topic that combines two of my favorite interests -- Unix
development and Ruby development. That's hard to beat.

Hi Eric and company. I already feel like I've learned and/or been
reminded of good POSIX programming practice in Ruby, just reading Eric's
code. Looking forward to the upcoming write-ups and discussion.

While not exactly a portable posix practice, I'd love to learn how to
get some better visibility into real memory use. Every modern OS
supports virtual memory and COW page sharing semantics, but there don't
seem to be good ways to examine a process or set of processes and
determine which part of the RSS is unique and which part is shared.

Yeah, there are no portable ways to get actual memory use as far as I
know. I remember the Ruby Enterprise Edition folks did some writeups on
the topic when REE first came out, I don't know of others.

CoW definitely makes accounting tricky, and it's not just for memory,
either. CoW filesytems have difficulty tracking free space usage, too.

I announce projects on ruby-talk semi-frequently. The best known and
contains the most Unix idioms is probably unicorn:
  git clone git://bogomips.org/unicorn

I'm not a fan of using or relying on reputation to promote things.
I prefer independent, as-unbiased-as-possible evaluations and having
each project stand on its own merit.

So yes, please be critical as I will make mistakes on this list :)

I have a link that covers pure posix shell man pages (shamelessly
stolen and reformatted from elsewhere):

http://rubyprogrammer.net/~stu/posix/

hope this helps.

Also, don't include HTML parts in your message (this goes for everyone).
Librelist doesn't (yet) filter HTML out.
