3.2 Walkabout - Merges and Features

3.2 Walkabout - Merges and Features

From:

HI Folks,
I'm starting the merge of pull requests from ashbb and wasnotrice.
I have two questions :
1. Is VLC IN or OUT for Walkabout? I saw a mention on my call for changes
about historical wishes. Is there a clear direction?
This directly affects question 2, since I"m stuck on this question for a
conflict-resolution.

2. I'm merging ashbb/develop first, then wasnotrice/ashbb-merge. Can
someone concur with me that this is the proper order for merging?

3. Anyone have specific advice on how to straighten out the website links?
I have not yet begun to look into this.

Shoes On!

Peter,

> 3. Anyone have specific advice on how to straighten out the website
links? I have not yet begun to look into this.

There are two sets of relevant links:

1. The links baked into Shoes, where Shoes should look to find the latest
installer download. These are located in lib/shoes/pack.rb, and look like
this:

  url =
"http://shoes.heroku.com/pkg/#{Shoes::RELEASE_NAME.downcase}/#{platform}/shoes"

aka

  http://shoes.heroku.com/pkg/policeman/win32/shoes
  http://shoes.heroku.com/pkg/policeman/linux/shoes
  http://shoes.heroku.com/pkg/policeman/osx/shoes

Notice, as Cecil mentioned, that there's nothing like "3.2" in this url.
It's all in the name. I can only assume that at some point, the links were
different, and did not include 'heroku'. We should make it a priority to
provide stable urls here, and maintain them. I would recommend that we
maintain the heroku ones since they are already published, but change that
domain to shoesrb.com in the code (as long as we use heroku for the
website, the domains resolve the same).

2. The urls where the download *actually* live. The links in #1 just
return another url, from which Shoes will try to download an installer. In
the case above, the urls contain:

  http://www.rin-shun.com/shoes/pkg/policeman/win32/latest_shoes.exe
  http://www.rin-shun.com/shoes/shoes3.run
  Not Found - 404

These urls can change.

Eric

Who has rin-shun, and what is the commitment of that owner to Shoes ?

There might be a way to flatly store the binaries on heroku, or associated
filestores, now that belongs to Heroku is run by Salesforce.

Also, a thinking-out-loud moment.

We're moving toward a release. So I believe our first step should be to
identify the upload target, some http....
Second, we should create the relevant links in a branch of
shoesrb.comsource. (the github/shoes/shoesrb ?)
Third, merge/commit/push of the website should be dependent upon team
GO/No-GO for all biniaries output of the release.

Thougths?

Yeah, but even then, no reason to have it on Ash's hosting bill.

I'm still an advocate of using GitHub to host the binaries, as Heroku
is explicitly not for that purpose. And GitHub is free, no reason to
pay for something like S3.

Dropbox? a 2Gb for free account sounds like sufficient.

Dropbox would disable the download if shoes were slashdotted and hundreds
of people downloaded it in the same week. GitHub is better if available to
us

Hi all,

I'm not sure, but I think it was not possible to download files from
https://github.com/shoes/shoes/downloads with open-uri. Because the url is
https, not http.

I hope this is unfounded fear...

Ahhh. If that's the case, using net/http instead is pretty trivial.

VLC is out. Unless anyone wants to take the task of making it re-work.
I think we all decided that a release is more important than holding
it up to figure out how to make something that's terribly broken work.

My understanding is that eric was already trying to handle the
ashbb/develop merge, and that's what wasnotrice/ashbb-merge is.

No idea, I've never dealt with this part of Shoes.

Hi Peter,

#1 and 2:
Eric did a great work!
Look at this: https://github.com/shoes/shoes/pull/185
Now, you'll be able to merge without any conflicts. :)

#3:
Umm,... sorry, I don't understand what you want to do...
What are the `the website links`?
