Compiling on ubuntu 11.04

Compiling on ubuntu 11.04

I compiled shoes on a 32-bit ubuntu 11.04 virtualbox VM last week, following
the wiki instructions. I ran into a couple of problems and updated the
wiki<https://github.com/shoes/shoes/wiki/Building-Shoes-on-Linux>,
but I have some questions for everyone.

1. One problem was that ubuntu 11.04 puts libjpeg.so and libsqlite.so in
/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu (it would be /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu on a 64-bit
machine, I think), instead of in /usr/lib, where the shoes build expects
them to be. My solution was to create soft links in the expected locations.
Has anyone installed shoes on ubuntu 11.04, 64-bit? Does it require the same
intervention? Is this a good solution for the time being?

2. The wiki's build instructions for ubuntu do not include installing ruby.
I used rvm, but that's probably not the simplest option to include on the
wiki. I notice that the Debian instructions call for ruby1.8-dev, even
though there is a note at the top indicating that 1.8.7 might not be the
best choice. Should debian and ubuntu just be updated to call for
ruby1.9-dev?

I'd be happy to re-compile on a fresh instance to verify the instructions.
Thanks!

Eric

I haven't tried 11.04 yet. I'm an Arch user. This is an okay temporary
solution, but we should really figure out something better.

Really, especially on Debian, everyone should be using rvm as a matter
of course. So that'd be preferred.

Thanks so much for updating the wiki. One of the things I have planned
in the coming months is getting some continuous integration going so
that we can figure out stuff like this sooner. Supporting so many
platforms is quite a burden at the moment.

Oh, that's funny. I initially tried Arch, but rvm was barfing on my 1.9.1
compile, and then I discovered my VM's disk image was corrupted, so I jumped
over to ubuntu just to get running on *something*.

No problem. I'll update the wiki.

Good idea. I'd like to help with that.

RVM really does need to be elevated in importance on the Linux portion
of the wiki. Ubuntu has a way to manage multiple installs of ruby that
is a complete nightmare to use. RVM has some oddities too but

If you're fixing the wiki Eric, Toss in a couple of links to RVM
tutorials (installing, using, updating versions). That way I'll know
where to look when I need them. ;-)

I updated the wiki's ubuntu install instructions for ubuntu 11.04, including
an RVM install. That should be the same for any linux, actually, and maybe
should be factored out. Cecil, there's a link there to the rvm project site.
It has a very complete manual :)

One further question: my build gave me a lot of warnings. Is this expected,
or is it because I'm building for 32-bit? Although C is not my strength, I
would be glad to work on addressing the warnings as a way to get better
acquainted with the code. See some of the warnings below.

There are a lot of warnings. I'd love to have them gone. :)

Let me know if I can help you with that.

Okay I tried compiling shoes on on Ubuntu 11.04

I compiled it with rvm, ruby 1.9.2-p180 , a couple of warnings seem to be
same

https://gist.github.com/1097693

If someone wants to get along hacking into this maybe we can pair up and
work on it sometime, drop me a line and we can meetup on irc.

Maybe we can also work on a new generic linux package.
