Windows Flickering Fixed!, and announcements question

Windows Flickering Fixed!, and announcements question

Hey all-

I'm very happy to announce that dear Wilkie has contributed two very
valuable patches to Shoes!

The first one is here:
http://github.com/shoes/shoes/commit/ece54aa3f23879a73ba3f1a46516125f606cbba7

It makes the flickering issue go away. This patch may have been the longest
amount of time to code ever: about 5 hours of work for a 14 character patch!

The second is this one:
http://github.com/shoes/shoes/commit/182cdee44d851d02aca0dd049374b19c32651870

This removes some warnings from Shoes. I think I might try to go the
distance with this!

On a second note... I don't want to make too many announcements like this.
Maybe batch them up, and make a post every friday? I think it's important
that everyone knows what's going on with Shoes, but I don't want to clog
inboxes.

Thoughts?

Steve,

I tried to build the latest shoes/shoes on my Windows XP laptop.

It works well on Windows XP but umm... on Vista, still flickering...

But I think my build may not be correct. So, could you upload Wilkie's build
(shoes-0.r14xx.exe) somewhere?

I'd like to confirm Wilkie's build on my Vista.

I don't have a Shoes build, but I do have a Hackety one:
http://github.com/hacketyhack/hacketyhack/downloads

I'll see if I can get him to build a shoes tonight.

Thanks for the link.
I downloaded:
http://github.com/downloads/hacketyhack/hacketyhack/hacketyhack.exe.zip

It was launched on my Vista but still flickering with `Aero mode`...

Okay. Hm. I had tested it on Windows 7, and so I thought Vista would be the
same....

This is a performance issue. My Vista is a low spec pc. That might be the
problem. So, please confirm some other pcs.

Untestable on my Vista system because that url complains about lack of
msvcrt-ruby191.dll.

I've enough problems writing bugs in 1.8.x without working on something
so new as
1.9, so it's not installed here yet.

Hrm, that's funny. Shouldn't it be all self-contained?

Ashbb, do you have any thoughts on this?

Hugh and Steve,

http://github.com/downloads/hacketyhack/hacketyhack/hacketyhack.exe.zip
is not an installer, just a launcher.

At first you have to install HH. Try to do the following:

1. download hacketyhack-0.r81.exe from:
   http://www.rin-shun.com/shoes
and execute the file to install HH

2. if you install HH into default directory,
you can find a launcher (hacketyhack.exe) under
   C:\Program Files\Common Files\Hackety Hack\0.r81

3. download hacketyhack.exe.zip from
   http://github.com/hacketyhack/hacketyhack/downloads
and unzip and replace the file to the above hacketyhack.exe

Hope this helps,
ashbb

Hi all,

I built the latest HH (r165) installer with the latest Shoes (r1467) and
uploaded to this site:
http://www.rin-shun.com/shoes/index.html

Please download and install into your Windows and confirm the flickering
issue.

In my case, it worked fine (no flickering) on Windows 7, but not worked
(still flickering) on Vista.

OK, I have installed that. Here is what happens. This is on Vista 64,
with the Aero interface on.
The window comes up but it is flickery. I can see a HacketyHack in
drawn letters, and the hand
with flat palm (High Five) flickering between each other. If I drag
the lower right corner of the
window to the right, the tow images separate.

I could see a tab saying Programs and below it "you have no programs"
and near there wa a button
labelled "Ready", so I pressed that.

At this point the flickering High Five disappeared, and I had the
Hackety Hack text image logo
in the bottom right. I can resize this window, and it will only go so
small, presumably by design.
When resizing or when scrolling with the mouse wheel, the window
flickers, otherwise it is stable.
When scrolling up, a small (about 5mm??) gap appears at the bottom of
the window, and the image
then sanps back down.

This looks to me, as someone who has not looked at the code yet, as
though there are some image
size issues on Vista., maybe tow bits of code that have different
conceptions of where things should
be on the screen? That's just a wild guess (well, a rathe tame one,
perhaps) and as such may be of
no use at all.

The manual display works properly as far as I can see.

I have no way to record this and stick it on a video site, so this is
about as diagnostic as I can get
about it. I hope it helps someone.

Oh, just for good measure: I put the machine into High Contrast Mode:
<shift-left_alt-print_screen>
toggles that, but it tends to move your icons about because it changes
fonts, and it will upset your
desktop background as well, in my experience -- i.e. it is not entirely
self reversing. Anyway, all
the flickering effects are visible in High Contrast mode. Normally
software suppresses background
images in high contrast mode, but hackety hack does not. I don't know
if that should be considered
a usability issue in the future, or not.
