If we go for one of the places from rentahostel, I recommend picking
somewhere that's not on an island.

I asked a contact at CalMac Ferries if they do any kind of sponsorship,
and apparently due to being government owned they're not allowed. Ferry
tickets get expensive, especially if you need to take cars, so sticking to
the mainland is probably a wise move.

So that precludes having Railscamp Balamory.

If we go with rentahostel, which i highly think we will, the following
are about the right size:

Gairloch Carn Dearg (38) -
http://www.rentahostel.com/hostels/highlands/gairloch_carn_dearg.aspx
Loch Ness (23) - http://www.rentahostel.com/hostels/highlands/loch_ness.aspx
Inveraray (28) - http://www.rentahostel.com/hostels/central/inveraray.aspx
Kendoon (32) - http://www.rentahostel.com/hostels/borders/kendoon.aspx
Minnigaff (30) - http://www.rentahostel.com/hostels/borders/minnigaff.aspx

For everyone's information, we have had 37 People interested, of whom
5 are from Outside the UK. The numbers in brackets are how many they
sleep.

If it happens in April, and there's financial room for it, I recommend
somewhere with a few more sleep spaces than we think we'll need. I'd be
surprised if we didn't collect at least one extra from SRC.

If it's a winter event, then access might be an issue. It would suck if we
had to abandon it because roads get closed due to snow.

It looks fairly likely that it will happen in February, due to the
fact that it's hard to find hostels to rent in April (because it's the
start of the high season)

Indeed it would suck, but then again, it would be awesome to be snowed in.

Until the food ran out and we had to resort to cannibalism, devastating
the Ruby community in Scotland and allowing those devious Pythonistas to
seize control!

*ahem*

More seriously, somewhere not TOO remote is probably best. Inverary is
pretty accessible - it was a common day-trip destination when I were a lad
living in Gourock. Don't really know about the others.

Hey guys,

Thought I'd just wade in here with a few points to consider:

1. First and foremost comes the number of beds the place has.. make sure it
can cope with the demand. The last Rails Camp here got 70 people, the first
one had approximately 30ish.
2. Closely followed is the coding space, and this is where I came a cropper
last year, it must have a decent space for coding in with plenty of room for
tables and chairs, and powerpoints. I didn't check the venue out personally
until I had already booked it (they assured me it would seat everyone) and
it turned out it did... but only just. If you're looking at a youth hostel
the main seating area will likely be the dining room too so this is another
issue to consider.. where does all the equipment go when you need to eat? is
there extra space.

Just my tuppenceworth, hope it helps, and I can't wait to see how it turns
out!
