Hey Everyone,

Just a reminder that there's a meeting this Wednesday.

Carson is going to be talking a bit about google IO and possibly even
giving a demo of the Android Accessory Developer Toolkit.

If you'd like to present something, just let us know.

Cheers,

Androidians;

For the meeting tomorrow night:

I have an app that I have coded using OpenGL and the Menu bar, but I guess
that I should have used the Action Bar.

Anybody willing to give a brief overview on the Action Bar, and
differences to the Menu Bar??

Thanks;

Hi John,

The Action Bar is the direction Android design is moving to. The menu bar
has being phased out, as devices are being shipped without menu buttons
entirely, requiring an extra on-screen button be placed. The Galaxy Nexus
adds this next to the Recent button (http://i.ytimg.com/vi/AsCGdSfcZBc/0.jpg),
while the HTC One series has it take up valuable screen real estate all by
itself at the bottom of the screen (
http://www.droid-life.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/menu-button.jpg).
Android 3.0 and up refer to the menu as legacy functionality.

When talking about the action bar, a limited number of buttons are placed
on the right-hand side. The rest exist in an "overflow." This overflow is
comprised of three vertical dots (⋯, but vertically) when on a device
without a menu button, and are presented when pressing the menu button on a
device that has one (such as a Nexus S).

More information on the action bar as a style is available here:
http://developer.android.com/design/patterns/actionbar.html. When designing
an app that will span both pre- and post-ICS, I'd suggest using Action Bar
Sherlock <http://actionbarsherlock.com/>.

Hope this helps,

Helps very much - the reply is appreciated. I had heard Chris Saunders
waxing poetically about it recently, but did not understand at the time
why it was important. Getting ones' fingers burnt is how one learns
sometimes. ;-)

Bocar, Your slides are a bit text heavy. Do you think you could trim down
at least the presentation part?

John, I'll try to bring my laptop with me tonight and I can do a little
code demo of how to integrate ABS into your application. I've been working
on migrating my android app over to fragments and ABS for the last while,
and ABS has been the most recent thing I've been working on.
