"Announce" lists

"Announce" lists

Hello all,

Some projects have "announce" lists, which are very low volume lists. This
is where new versions of the project are announced, and possibly other
major announcements.

The nice thing about these "announce" lists is that they're low volume. You
can subscribe to the announce list of a project you like, and trust that you
do *not* get emails every day from people who are asking for support about
using the project. Assuming, of course, that the project manager has a
strict discipline and is not tempted to post non-major things to the
announce list.

Which is where I see a problem with using librelist for such lists. I want
to make an announce list for my project GarlicSim, but I feel personally
responsible to keep the announce list low volume. And I understand that in
librelist I can't stop anyone from posting.

Is there a solution to this?

Ram.

I'm pretty sure people will do what you say if you tell them.

I assume you mean that I will tell them to not post to the announce list.
But once in a while I will post "GarlicSim 1.2.3 released" and someone will
post back "Wow that's cool!", wasting the time of everyone who is subscribed
to the announce list.

Is that a question? Can we help in some way? Is there a solution for your
problem that still seems consistent with the free spirit of librelist?

I was guessing there isn't and that librelist could never be used for this
purpose, but I asked just in case someone will have a good idea how to do
it.

You should try it first. I think you're just too focused on the "right
way" that it should be done and really your worry probably isn't that
important.

In other words: relax, you'll live longer.

Well, I hope you're right.

Just today I had an idea regarding this issue. Maybe Librelist should detect
when a list's name ends with "announce", and then deal with it using a
different algorithm than from regular lists? How that algorithm will work is
an open question, of course, because deciding who is allowed to post on the
announce list is a potentially problematic decision. But I think we can come
up with something which will mostly work.

What do you think?

I thought of things like that, but I couldn't quite figure out how you'd
handle "ownership".

I agree, determining ownership will be the most sensitive issue. I don't
have a bulletproof solution, but I thought of a few sort-of-good-enough
solutions: (Feel free to modify)

   - Giving ownership to the person who created the announce list.
   - Giving ownership to the person who created the original list. For
example, if Joe created foo@librelist.org, Joe gets automatic ownership
   of foo.announce@librelist.org.
   - Having some voting procedure. For example, if there is a dispute over
who owns foo.announce@librelist.org, a ballot is started between members
of foo@librelist.org, which will determine who will own the announce
   list.
   - Dispensing with the ownership concept, but when a message is posted on
foo.announce@librelist.org, it is first sent to several of the heavy
users of foo@librelist.org. They get a chance to report it as non-worthy
before it gets sent to other list members.
