Hi Robert.

  # uname -a
Linux johan 3.0.0-1-amd64 #1 SMP Sun Jul 24 02:24:44 UTC 2011 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Packages are not held back by me but the system

This looks funny. I was on another system when the mail came through and
had to forward it to another of my emails.

Thanks
Johan

Hello Johan,

It seems that these packages are hold back.

I think that has a specific reason, i.e. compatibility break.

What version of LM are you using?

Read more about holding packages here:

I believe you can force upgrades when packages are held back by doing

apt-get install [packagename]

Worth a try.

I don't see why it should. I've never had any problems with it. But if
you're worried about upgrading them, then, er, why were you asking?

On another linux flavour when this happened I used ** apt-get
dist-upgrade ** and it went ok.
Now this will not.
Now to be safe would like more information to do an informed decision.
Thanks for your input. Will try and find out what happens.

Johan

As it is only VLC it will definitely not break your whole system.

Hence, it is worth to try it.

But my initial question regarding your version actually referred to
whether you are using LMDE or LM?

If LMDE it might be that those packages are hold back because they
expect a certain update packages which are now delivered by LMDE.

Hi Robert,

My version is the latest LMDE.
Using it to test it. Learning experience. Not as a main system. Running
it on an external USB disc.
My main system is Debian 6.03.

It is about six packages that is held back. Tried them one by one to
install. Problem - dependencies - not installable - etc.
Thanks for your input.

In this case you may then just wait for the update package.

Or do you really require the most recent version of VLC?

No need for latest Vlc. Will just keep updating until those packages
disappear.
