There's a lein-tar plugin that sounds like it might fit the bill.

Assembly plugin effectively lets you declare contents of tar/gz (or zip)
archives, I.e your application jar, dependencies, configuration files,
scripts, documentation, etc.

Many open source projects just ship a jar, and thus don't need this sort of
thing, but some old school, non-devops shops/projects still do things this
way.
