Shame on me for mindlessly following the homebrew instructions at
http://www.engineyard.com/blog/2010/homebrew-os-xs-missing-package-manager/.
Then I noticed the comments that were critical about chown'ing /usr/local
to a user account as well as losing access to mysql tables, and sure enough,
now my rails project can't find gems and I can't access my development
databases anymore. I chown'ed /usr/local and /usr/local/mysql back to root,
but the problems persist. Can anyone help me set my system right again?
Here is some hopefully useful output:

Gratefully,

Kimball

They weren't ever owned by root. Probably they were owned by the 'mysql' user.

that's the step I'm trying to undo, in the case of /usr/local/mysql. I had
followed the directions in chowning to mysql previously. I reinstalled
mysql in any case.

So did you have mysql installed from somewhere other than Homebrew?
