setting up with total choice

setting up with total choice

I am trying to set up
friendica on total choice account.
So far I am able to
bring up a blank screen using the following.
http://mikequillian.quillian.net/

and

http://quillian.net/00_f/friendica-master/index.php

I am at the point where
a dialog should come up but doesn't.
Total choice support
believes friendica will work in the system.
Can you tell me how to
get past this point?
I have been to the
friendica support forum but can't find a way way to register or post a question.
Wordpress works fine
with total choice so, I expect friendica will work also.
Thanks
Mike

A blank screen is a sign of a php error. Do you have access to lag files
that tell you these errors?

I do not know what a lag file is. How would my files be any different than
anyone elses files since they are all from the same source?

I guess: log file, not lag ;-)

Please describe, how did you try to install: in a subdomain
(http://mikequillian.quillian.net/) or this way
http://quillian.net/00_f/friendica-master/?
If you're using a subdomain, please add this to your .htaccess:

RewriteBase /

- Oliver

I am using a subdomain and the subdomain is redirected to the friendica folder.

to be there.

if I call the subdomain, I will redirect to this path?

http://quillian.net/00_f/friendica-master/

that will not work imho ...
This should be the correct path for the install process and your friendica
instance ->  http://mikequillian.quillian.net/
And in that case you need edit the .htaccess: delete (uncomment) the #
sign in front of "RewriteBase /"

You can use http://quillian.net/00_f/friendica-master/but in that case you
need to do the install process with this path.

Remember that your friendica adress will be composed from your instance url.
e.g. mike@mikequillian.quillian.net

(... my english is not the best, hope you understand me)

I have tried this url many times.
http://quillian.net/00_f/friendica-master/
"And in that case you need edit the .htaccess: delete (uncomment) the #
sign in front of "RewriteBase /"In order to do this I would need to know
exactly how to do it as in step by step.

It generates a blank screen with no dialog.
Are people actually using friendica or is it still an experiment? I am
thinking there is not a way for a person who doesn't write code to set a
site up.

A lot of people who aren't coders are using it daily. There are two
issues here.

1 - the blank screen
2 - your site redirection mechanism

Let's take #2 first. You are known on the Friendica network as xyz@host.
If you've got more than one hostname, you've got more than one network
identity. Sites are going to get confused. Don't do it.

Friendica supports 'paths' (e.g. https://foobar.com/something) but other
networks don't - and Friendica communicates with these networks. So if
you use anything but a top level domain (https://foobar.com), you're
severely restricting what you can do. Yeah, you can do it, but don't.

Then you shouldn't need to touch the .htaccess file. Leave it alone, and
use the one we provided. It works.

Now for #1. PHP is throwing an error. Unfortunately you don't yet have
an application configuration file so you aren't seeing the error and you
can't use the configuration file to send this to a log.

There are a couple of things which typically cause these errors:

A. An incorrect PHP version.
B. Not all the required PHP modules are present.

Does your hosting provider allow you to access the command line? Or do
they hide everything behind cpanel? If it's only the latter, this could
be tricky to debug.

If you can access the command line, do this:

php -v

Make sure that you're running version 5.2.something, 5.3 is much better;
5.4 is better yet.

Then,

php index.php

This will load all the necessary application files and you should see on
the terminal if there was an error or missing function. Then it's a
simple matter of getting your provider to add the necessary module which
defines that function.

A list of necessary modules is present in INSTALL.txt; in particular
make sure you've got curl, gd (with at least jpeg support), mysql,
mbstring, mcrypt, and openssl extensions

Also many small hosting providers block PHP functions like proc_open and
exec. Friendica requires these and if they are blocked it could create
the white screen on startup. We've tried to anticipate the
thousands of ways that service providers can screw up their hosting
environment, but I'm always amazed by the ways they can screw things up
which we didn't fully anticipate.

OK, let's say that none of these worked and you're still stuck. Now you
do have to play with code.

Open index.php with a text editor and add these lines directly after the
first line (which reads '<?php'):

error_reporting(E_ERROR | E_WARNING | E_PARSE );
ini_set('error_log','php.out');
ini_set('log_errors','1');
ini_set('display_errors', '0');

Now visit your site again and after you get a blank page, look for the
file 'php.out' in the Friendica directory. This will tell you what went
wrong.

If this file doesn't exist, and you have a blank screen, it probably
means that the file couldn't be written by the webserver into this
directory (a permission problem). If you've got cpanel access, create
the file 'php.out' and give it full permissions (777 or writable by
anybody). Then try again.

I have been following the instructions from the friendica site. I am
guessing I have version 3.2 since that is the one that is being offered.
 I decided to go with a shared server because it was said to be simpler
and more useful.
The easy installation guide is apparently not useable. The recommendation
is to use a sub domain so I am trying to set it up that way.  I don’t care
about that. I will set it up any way I can get it to work.
This link has my php information.
 PHP Version 5.3.27,  http://www.quillian.net/info.php
I don’t know what you mean by command line or how to find out anything
about it. Where would I go to find a command line? I know very few php
terms.

do have to play with code.

Open index.php with a text editor and add these lines directly after the
first line (which reads '<?php'):

error_reporting(E_ERROR | E_WARNING | E_PARSE );
ini_set('error_log','php.out');
ini_set('log_errors','1');
ini_set('display_errors', '0');

This line contains a call to the database. Can you check your MySQL
database, with phpmyadmin, adminer or something alike, if something was
written to the DB during your installation process?

I think that was a misspelling, and they author meant "log file".
I would need to see the remainder of the thread, but if I recall,
you were having difficulty, and the person trying to assist you
wanted to see what relevant information was in log files,
but I do not recall which ones.
Various applications on your server log stuff that might be helpful,
such as errors, for instance, in diagnosing where your difficulties
like.

Thanks Tony, I am going to put the friendica installation on hold for a
while. If friendica is going to catch on, eventually there will have to be
a way less techincally savey people can get it up and running.
