69.71.178.180 is me. I tried to set up DreamHost stats for my server,
to check out the slowdown, but it doesn't seem to be working. Not
finding index.php is the more common error.

I've made the edit. No immediate change, but I'll keep trying.

It is a shared server plan. I should probably open a support ticket, eh?
I have managed to log on now, but trying to navigate anywhere is
slower than molasses.

I just made a fix to something which might be affecting you and could be
causing a lot of performance issues.

OK, I'll update again.
I think the modification to .htconfig did kick in eventually. I am able
to navigate around now in a reasonable fashion, but I don't think the
site is actually updating as it should, so maybe your new fix will solve
that.
I did submit a support request ticket to DreamHost, but they are
shrugging their virtual shoulders at me, and so not admitting anything
on their end. :-)
Thanks Mike!

I can get to your site, but it takes about 20 minutes. Maybe there is
something with Dreamhost servers. Is it on a shared or dedicated host?

If this isn't your address - somebody may be trying to hack your
Dreamhost stats page.
In any event, Dreamhost kills processes whenever it sees the load go up
significantly.
Add this line to your .htconfig.php -
$dreamhost_error_hack = true;
This is a special hack I created so that when Dreamhost is erroring out,
we trap the error and redirect to the page that was initially requested
instead of showing an error page. I used to get these a lot.
