Switch mailing list software away from librelist?

Switch mailing list software away from librelist?

From:

Quite a number of users have complained on Github about issues with
subscribing to the Flask librelist or not receiving messages:
 - https://github.com/mitsuhiko/flask/issues/682
 - https://github.com/zedshaw/librelist/issues/7

As someone who's personally experienced this, I can attest that it's quite
annoying. When librelist is even preventing a major contributor to Flask
from joining the project mailing list
<https://github.com/mitsuhiko/flask/issues/682#issuecomment-119747515>, it
seems this is something that we should fix.

What holds us back from switching away from librelist to
https://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/flask?

It may not be the perfect solution, but it's probably good enough, and
certainly better than librelist, which Zed seems to have mostly abandoned.

I'm not sure from a technical perspective what this would take, if the
users can be migrated en-masse by an admin, or if we just all need to
manually resubscribe to the new list.
The flask website would need to be updated as well to point to the new
list.

Thoughts?

Cheers,
Jeff

I would greatly support this effort a lot more since I have to use my work
email instead to participate on the email list.

What about everyone just using the Google Group instead of the mailing
list? Or Stackoverflow.

It's a good question, and there's already an ongoing discussion of the role
of the mailing list vs StackOverflow on this Github issue:
https://github.com/pocoo/metaflask/issues/60#issuecomment-87782282

Regardless of the delineation of what should go on SO vs Github Issues vs a
mailinglist, it's clear that Flask still needs a mailing list. And since
Librelist has bugs preventing many people from subscribing (as documented
in the various github issues I linked to previously), those folks would
really appreciate if we could switch to the Mailman list.

Are there any objections to migrating to the new list at the end of July?
If so, please speak up.

Otherwise, here are the associated todos:

Updating the website:
@untitaker told me he supports the move and he has commit access on the
main flask repo so he can update the information on
http://flask.pocoo.org/mailinglist/ to point to the new mailman list.

Migrating current subscribers:
I will email Zed to see if it's possible to get a list of subscribers to
the current librelist so that we could just move everyone over, but I'm not
optimistic as Zed has ignored previous requests
<https://github.com/zedshaw/librelist/issues/7> (Does anyone on this list
know him personally?). So most likely *everyone will need to resubscribe
here: https://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/flask
<https://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/flask>*

Migrating old list archives:
I will also look into whether it's possible to import the librelist email
archives into Mailman's mbox format, but also not optimistic that it will
be easy enough to be worth the effort vs just having the mailing list
webpage link to both old and new archives. If anyone's worked with mailman
migrations in the past, I'd certainly appreciate any help or advice.

Cheers,
Jeff

I would say move to mailman if thats the better option.
As I'm not a long time member of this mailinglist I would think that
moving old archives is not mandatory for the move to mailman.

Everyone who's offered feedback has been in favor of the switch, so we are
going to migrate to Mailman.

*REMINDER: Everyone must re-subscribe here to stay on the
list: https://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/flask

I will be working with Markus to update the website to point to the new
mailing list within the next few days, and I will also send out a couple of
reminders to this list over the next few weeks. Most likely you won't want
to receive all these annoying reminders, so you can unsubscribe from the
librelist by sending an email to flask-unsubscribe@librelist.com.

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a way to shutdown the old
librelist, so instead we'll just have to ask anyone who emails the
librelist to repost on the new Mailman list.

Thanks everyone.
