Experimental standalone Linux binary

Experimental standalone Linux binary

Hi,

I've been experimenting a bit with cx-freeze [1] and managed to build a
standalone Attic distribution that seems to work on at least the
following Linux distributions:

- CentOS 5
- CentOS 6
- Debian 7
- Arch Linux

I'd love to get some feedback on how well it works for other people...

I tested it on Debian squeeze (6), and it didn't work:

$ ./attic
-bash: ./attic: cannot execute binary file

On a RedHat machine:

$ cat /etc/redhat-release
Scientific Linux release 6.5 (Carbon)

it seems to work fine.

And on Ubuntu 12.04 it also works.

Is that a 32 bit system by any chance?

I just built a i686 version if that's the case:

Yes!

It works.  Thanks!

Looks interesting, but don't distributions prefer their own packages?

Yes, but this is mostly intended for people stuck with old Linux
distributions where no official packages exists and it's difficult to do
a manual install.
