Manual daemonisation

Hi,
        Are there any settings to prevent the server from daemonising
itself? I'm using upstart to control processes which run on my server
and it doesn't behave well with processes that daemonise themselves. 

        Does this sound like a useful feature? I see that someone else
has asked for it [1]. I could try to provide a patch unless there's a
deliberate decision to not do this.
