Yep, I thought of that too, but you're thinking from a lurker
perspective I think. You're thinking, "All these people will subscribe
to a list and then say hi and nothing else, that'll be annoying." I'm
thinking, "People will make their first post count and not join unless
they need to ask something or want to participate."
I'm hoping this will be true also as I make it easier to lurk with other
means, through nice archives, rsync, and so on.
But, it's trivial to change later. This isn't a perl script running off
a byzantine postfix alias setup. If I want to drop the first message,
it's a one line change. If I want an address for "subscribe without
saying hi" then I make a two line change.
Which makes it easier to experiment with how to do a nicer mailing list
for people. I can just change it later if it starts to suck.

Sure, if it's a "small" list. But if you're going to have say a few
thousand subscribers, all those "Hi, I joined" messages are going to
reduce the signal-to-noise ratio by quite a bit...
