Homebrew Bottles (Binary Support)

Homebrew Bottles (Binary Support)

Folks,

https://github.com/mxcl/homebrew/commit/e4dd52e

I merged in my first attempt at adding binary support to Homebrew. Binary
packages are known as "bottles" and rather than building them they are
"poured".

At the moment no formulae support bottling but I will shortly be adding it
to Qt and Boost so if you install with the default options (and also
possibly on 10.6 and 64-bit only) it will use the bottle rather than the
source.

If you're interested in testing this, please let me know as it would be
good to have at least a few people to help test this, particularly if you
have 10.5 or a 32-bit 10.6 machine.

If you're convinced the addition of binaries is the apocalypse then please
write an angry email to /dev/null and then export
HOMEBREW_BUILD_FROM_SOURCE and you'll be able to spend 8 hours pointlessly
building packages and remain as (un)happy as you are at the moment with no
more disruptions to your life.

Why “bottles”? Isn’t it risking confusion with Wine?

I still have a MBP1,1 running 10.5, although I seldom boot it on OS X or
at all. Still, if you have particular test you want to run, please ask,
just be aware that I don’t normally use the box on a daily basis.

I have an first gen MacBook running 10.6.7. I could do some testing for
the 32bit part.
