This feature is already implemented on the "synth" branch, slated to become
the next release series (1.1.x). If you want to try it out in development
mode you can switch to that branch with this command:
git checkout -b origin/synth
In general, adding features to the map viewer is accomplished by editing the
code in the geonode-client project:
http://github.com/GeoNode/geonode-client/
You'll want to familiarize yourself with GeoExt: http://geoext.org/ and the
GXP add-on collection for it: http://github.com/opengeo/gxp/
