Dear list, following a meeting with Chris Holmes, we would like to introduce ourselves. ITHACA is a no profit association that works mainly for the UN World Food Programme in the field of geomatics and emergency response. You can find further information on www.ithacaweb.org. We already started to develop our web applications using the same architecture as GeoNode. So we decided to join the GeoNode community in order to contribute. The first steps for us are to understand how GeoNode works and to migrate our architecture. Our aim is to develop an application devoted to emergency management based on GeoNode. We will be happy to collaborate with you all in developing this amazing project. Kind regards. ITHACA team -- Simone Dalmasso, Paolo Pasquali, Eros Agosto, Fabio Giorgi, Piero Boccardo
Hello, My name is Ben Wyss, I am working on an open source web based mapping/professional network/analytical tool for the GEM foundation (http://www.globalquakemodel.org). We are possibly going to develop our application with the OpenGeo stack: OpenLayers, ExtJS, GeoExt, GeoServer. Thus far we have had good success using this stack to produce some application mock-ups. Some of our challenges include identifying user needs, promote the flow of open data while adhering to standards and preserving data quality, identifying tools and strategies that will transform assessments into mitigation activities (from a global to a local scale). The biggest challenge seems to be developing an application/tool that will bring together many institutions and agencies to promote communication and collaboration on similar initiates. To do this, we are exploring both the Spatial Data Infrastructure/GeoNetwork and the GeoNode concepts. I would be interested to hear your perspective on these topics. I noticed on your web site that you are using GeoNetwork, could you share with me some of your experiences with GeoNeteork. How are you planning to incorporate GeoNode, in addition to GeoNetwork? Best regards, Ben On 6/15/10 3:17 PM, Simone Dalmasso wrote: > Dear list, > following a meeting with Chris Holmes, we would like to introduce > ourselves. > ITHACA is a no profit association that works mainly for the UN World > Food Programme in the field of geomatics and emergency response. Please feel free to address any questions you have about how Geonode works to this list. We'll be glad to help. If you could tell us any more about your current system, that could help us make recommendations about how to migrate. Also, would any of your team members like to introduce themselves? Knowing more about your developers and their background will help us collaborate. Best regards, -- Sebastian Benthall OpenGeo - http://opengeo.org
Thanks Sebastien. I introduce myself: I am Simone Dalmasso and I'm in charge for the web-gis development(even a little bit of server configuration and maintenance). I am an environmental engineer and Ph.D. student, I've started to work in the web-gis field about 4 years ago. Starting from the first web-gis based on mapserver and chameleon I've then discovered geoserver, than openlayers than python and django and so on. Well now our architecture is based on Geoserver, OL, Ext.js, GeoExt, Django and Postgres. currently we have a django project with several apps that share some basic functionalities. I think that trying to migrate on GeoNode could be an occasion for a good refactoring.... Some months ago we started to work on a project based on the same components for the automatic web-gis generation in order to allow a user to build it's own map with different functionalities and tools, then we interrupted this because of haiti emergency and other projects. But the interesting thing is that all we have had the feeling of a need of a system more integrated for the web-gis and data management, and GeoNode is what is needed. Thank to all. Thanks Sebastian, this link <http://130.192.92.158/floods/> is one of our web applications. In particular this is the one that monitor in near real time the possible floods around the world. Is still a beta and the code is under deep refactoring but for now works fine. Welcome! I just sent an email on the 'roadmap process', and would love to get a 'GeoNode for emergency management' roadmap fleshed out. We can discuss a bit here, and then submit items to the roadmap tracker. Awhile ago we talked to Schuyler Erle who went to Haiti after the earthquake, and got some insight from him of potential features to make GeoNode useful. I just have one line sentences, would like to hear if you agree, if you have more details, or more ideas. * Localized data export - The ability to select an area of interest of a data set and export _only_ the subset of data within that area of interest. * A Verified/Unverified data listing - helps filter data by metadata completeness. use case: needing to filter through lots of unverified data for a sensitive purpose. (Maybe this could be a scaled ranking?) * Low bandwidth UI - A stripped down UI for low bandwidth users. (Fewer images, more static pages) * Performance Tuning - Performance benchmarking and testing in various conditions and application optimization. * Hard metadata and data transfer - The ability to do a metadata catalog dump from GeoNode that can then be transfered by USB and browsed (offline? by another GeoNode?), and the ability to do an offline data sync between GeoNodes when there is low connectivity and multiple local machines.
