isn't that so sad? That they just threw it all out! holy f*ck
i do think it is a great plan, and awesome on ya for trying it out =) but
it also shows extreme and obvious problems with the system, because they
didn't even think twice about it...that's why we gotta keep doin what
we're doin!
i plan to be there this sunday if all goes according to plan, finally
finally finally! i am excited to meet yous (whoever will be there). what's
the address of where you're meeting to cook again?

First off, sorry I've been so AWOL lately; a few kinks in the romantic
life (of the lesser-fun variety!), a new job (I will be named manager of a
Scarborough grocery store in a week...how awesomely ironic...I look
forward to some changes to reduce food waste, especially with
expired/damaged product) and other things are conspiring to keep me away
from FNB at the moment. (And before you ask, I seem to have misplaced
those meeting minutes - I tore my apartment apart).
However, not all is bad news, I just had tremendous luck this week with a
great "scam" to ensure maximised dumpster-diving - and wanted to try it on
a larger scale with FNB members if you're up for it. Basically, expired
food will be thrown out when it's noticed...but that might mean two items
a day (which we find in dumpsters) for eternity, rather than getting rid of
all 200 items in the
store at once.
Essentially, you find a store without a trash compactor - a grocery store
would make the most sense (though I chose the grocery aisles at Dollarama
for my test run...). You then "go shopping", take a cart or basket and
spend the better part of an hour combing through the store for all the
expired/damaged food products. (things like cookies and chips expire fast,
while obviously canned goods and condiments are much rarer to find
expired). Take everything you can, that may mean taking all 15 bags of
Barbecue Chips that have expired, and getting a couple strange looks from
store workers. Ignore them, you're getting all this food for free. When
you've got everything in the store, you go up to the cash and act like a
half-crazed OCD person..."I came here to buy oatmeal this morning and
noticed the box was expired, you could've killed me, don't you know this
is a lawsuit waiting to happen..." and then simply segue into how "this
whole
cart" is full of expired crap you found around the store. Then leave
empty-handed. When you return at closing-time, you'll find that entire
cart full of food in the trash, free for the taking.

awesome!did you know that dominion (now called metro) has the fresh or
free policy? basically if you find something in the store thats expired,
and take it to customer service, you get a fresh version of that item for
free. there are people who do their grocery shopping by doing this. they
dont treat you with much of a friendly attitude, especially if you do it
with a bunch of stuff, but it is their policy. my one roomie is a manager
at a metro, and she has worked in their franchise for over a decade, i get
to hear all the funny stories revolving around this practice. now if you
find a metro without a compacter, you can get both! haha! the expired and
the fresh!
